Râșnov fortress — the Rosenauer Burg — crowns the hill above the town of Râșnov, about 15–18 km from Brașov on the road to Bran. Unlike the Saxon church-fortresses of the plain, it was a refuge fortress: a small walled town on the hilltop where the villagers moved with their animals and stores when raiders came, with houses, a chapel, a school and a well cut deep into the rock.
Status in 2026. The fortress has been under restoration since February 2020, with completion expected in 2027. The main citadel interior is not open; the fortress garden and the Báthory Tower are. Tickets are 10 lei (age 12 and over; under-12s free), payable by card only, on site. Opening is daily, 09:00–19:00.
A new inclined lift, "Asaltul Cetății", climbs from Piața Unirii in Râșnov, behind the House of Culture; check its prices on the operator's site. Otherwise the walk up takes around 20 minutes.
The view over the Bârsa plain and towards the Bucegi and Piatra Craiului is the real reward. Dino Parc is at the foot of the hill, and Bran Castle is 20 minutes further south. See the Râșnov guide.
