The royal Prahova Valley, 40–50 km south of Brașov: Peleș and Pelișor castles in Sinaia, Cantacuzino Castle in Bușteni, the Bucegi cliffs above — and the DN1 traffic below.
What it is
Across the Predeal pass, in Prahova county, the valley drops between the Bucegi and Baiului mountains through two resorts. Sinaia grew around the monastery and the summer palace of King Carol I in the late nineteenth century and still carries its royal-resort manners; Bușteni, a few kilometres north, lies right under the great wall of the Bucegi, crowned by the Heroes' Cross on Caraiman.

In Sinaia: Peleș Castle, the royal palace that is Romania's most elaborate interior — adults 100 lei, open Wednesday to Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday, and closed from 2 November to 1 December 2026; next to it, Pelișor, closed from 28 September to 3 November 2026. Also Sinaia Monastery, the Casino in Dimitrie Ghica park, the royal railway station and, at Cumpătu, the George Enescu Memorial Museum. In Bușteni: Cantacuzino Castle, best known lately as a filming location for Netflix's *Wednesday* (castle and park from 65 lei, castle, gallery and park 85 lei), the Urlătoarea waterfall walk and, on the plateau, the Heroes' Cross. Good tables include Taverna Sârbului and KUIB in Sinaia and Ancuța's House in Bușteni.
What it is like
Sinaia is elegant around the park and the castle, then quickly ordinary; Bușteni is smaller and more of a hiking base. Both fill with Bucharest weekenders from Friday evening, and the valley in winter doubles as a ski area on the Bucegi plateau.

The catch
The DN1 is the only road through the valley and on weekends it jams badly — Brașov to Sinaia can take far longer than the hour it needs on a quiet weekday. Check the Peleș and Pelișor closures above before you go: autumn 2026 is exactly when both close. Peleș works with timed slots and a daily cap, so arrive early in season.
Getting there
About 40 km from Brașov to Bușteni and 48 km to Sinaia on the DN1 through Predeal — roughly 50 minutes to an hour without traffic. Trains on the Brașov–Bucharest line stop at both, often the least stressful option at weekends. See castles and getting here.
