Râșnov
A small town under a hilltop peasant fortress, about 15–18 km from Brașov: Râșnov citadel (under restoration), Dino Parc, Valea Cetății cave and quiet guesthouses on the road to Bran.
What it is
Râșnov — Rosenau to the Saxons — is a market town on the road from Brașov to Bran, overlooked by the fortress its villagers built on the hill above to shelter from raids. It sits between the city and the castle country, which is exactly how most visitors use it: a stop on the way to Bran, or a quieter base for both.

Cetatea Râșnov has been under restoration since 2020, with completion expected in 2027; the main citadel interior is closed, but the fortress garden and the Báthory Tower are open daily, and a ticket costs 10 lei (card only, on site; under-12s free). A new inclined lift climbs to it from the town centre. At the foot of the hill, Dino Parc has more than 130 life-size dinosaurs on four hectares (adults 60 lei, children 40 lei) — a guaranteed success with under-twelves. Just outside town, the Valea Cetății cave can be visited, and the Sissi promenade is a gentle forest walk. To eat: La Promenadă and Sub Cetate Sergiana.
What it is like
A quiet, slightly faded small town most of the year, busy on summer weekends when families pour into Dino Parc. The old centre keeps a few Saxon houses; the views from the fortress over the Bârsa plain are the reward.
Who should stay here
Families, drivers exploring Bran and Zărnești, and anyone who wants mountain air and lower prices than Brașov. Guesthouses dominate — Casa Râșnoveană, Casa Contelui, Das Fort Boutique — with the larger Resort Ambient towards Cristian.
The catch
You need a car, or patience with regional buses. The fortress, the town's main sight, is a building site until the restoration ends, so do not come expecting the full citadel. Rockstadt Extreme Fest, long associated with Râșnov, moved to Ghimbav in 2026.
Getting there
