Start from an area
Brașov is three towns in one valley: the Saxon walled city, Romanian Șchei tucked behind it, and the modern city spreading east. Twelve kilometres up the mountain sits Poiana, and within an hour lie Bran, Râșnov, Predeal and the Prahova Valley.
Old Town
The walled Saxon town of Kronstadt: Piața Sfatului, the Black Church, the towers above the walls and Tâmpa rising straight behind. The obvious first base.
Poiana Brașov
Romania's best-known ski resort, 12 km above the city at about 1,020 m: seven homologated slopes under Postăvarul, a gondola and two cable cars, and summer trails and bike park.
Șchei
The old Romanian quarter outside the walls: St Nicholas church, the First Romanian School, steep lanes, the Junii parade and the path to Solomon's Rocks.
Blumăna
The old suburb just north of the walls: Livada Poștei park, the Cetățuia on Straja hill, calm residential streets and some of the best-value rooms near the centre.

Is Brașov worth visiting?
Yes — it is the rare Romanian city that is both beautiful and easy. A Saxon walled centre with the Black Church and Piața Sfatului, the forested Tâmpa rising straight out of the Old Town, Poiana Brașov's ski slopes twenty minutes away and Bran, Râșnov and Peleș within an hour. Two to four days is right; add a day for skiing in winter.
How many days do you need in Brașov?
Two days for the Old Town, Tâmpa and Șchei; a third for Bran and Râșnov; a fourth for Peleș or Sighișoara. Skiers usually base themselves in Poiana or in town for three to five days.
When is the ski season in Poiana Brașov?
Usually from December to the end of March. Over the last three seasons the opening ranged from 30 November (2023) to 2 January (2026), depending on cold and snowmaking; the 2025/26 season closed on 29 March. The 2026/27 dates and prices are approved by the city in late autumn — our ski page updates when they are published.
How do I get from Bucharest to Brașov?
By train from Gara de Nord (about 2½–3 hours), by car on DN1 through the Prahova Valley (around 170 km, much slower on Friday and Sunday evenings), or by private transfer from Otopeni airport. Brașov also has its own airport, Brașov-Ghimbav (GHV), served by Wizz Air.
Are there bears in Brașov?
Yes. Brown bears come down to the edges of the city — Tâmpa, Răcădău, Noua and Poiana — mostly at night and in autumn. Never feed or approach one, keep food in the car, and call 112 if a bear is in a residential area. Seeing them safely is easiest from a licensed hide or at the Libearty sanctuary in Zărnești.
