Castelul Bran
Törzburg
Bran Castle — Törzburg to the Saxons — stands on a rock above the pass that once carried trade and armies between Transylvania and Wallachia, about 30 km south-west of Brașov. Built by the Saxons of Brașov as a customs post and fortress, it later became a summer residence of Queen Marie of Romania, and most of what you see inside — furniture, stoves, the narrow stairs and small rooms around the courtyard — reflects that royal period. The Dracula story attached to it is a twentieth-century marketing invention rather than history, but it is why the castle is one of the most visited sights in the country.
Hours (official site): 1 April – 31 July and 1 October – 31 March, Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–18:00; August until 19:30; September until 19:00; on Mondays always from 12:00. Times are for last entry.
Tickets. The official site listed 90 lei for adults, 60 for over-65s, 50 for students and 30 for children when we checked in September 2026, but independent sources quote higher 2026 prices, so treat 90 lei as the minimum and check the ticket shop. Priority entry and the Time Tunnel and torture-room exhibitions cost extra.
