Bran & Moeciu
Bran Castle and the mountain villages around it, 30 km from Brașov: one of Romania's most visited sights, then Moeciu's meadows, chalets and some of the region's best rural hotels.
What it is
Bran is the pass village at the foot of the castle that guarded the road between Transylvania and Wallachia — Törzburg to the Saxons. Beyond it, Moeciu, Șimon, Sohodol and Predeluț spread up into the hills between the Bucegi and Piatra Craiului: scattered farmsteads, hay meadows and, increasingly, chalets and small luxury hotels. Together they are the rural resort of Bran–Moeciu.
What is here
Bran Castle is the reason the car parks exist. Official hours are 09:00–18:00 from Tuesday to Sunday for most of the year (later in summer) and from 12:00 on Mondays; the official site listed adult tickets at 90 lei when we checked in September 2026, but other sources quote higher 2026 prices, so treat that as a floor. Halloween at the castle runs 24–30 October and 1 November 2026. Next to it: the open-air Bran Village Museum and the National Museum of Bran. Further out, Bran Monastery and the Devil's Mill waterfall at Predeluț. Among the restaurants, Conacul Törzburg and Brandeberg stand out.
What it is like
Two different places. The strip of souvenir stalls below the castle is crowded and commercial from late morning, especially at weekends and in summer. Five minutes up any side road, the landscape takes over: wooden houses, sheep, meadows under the Bucegi ridge — the Transylvania people imagine.
Who should stay here
Couples and families who want the countryside, walkers, and anyone who wants to see the castle at opening time before the coaches arrive. The luxury end is strong: Matca (Relais & Châteaux) at Șimon, Zara Chalet — newly listed in the Michelin hotel guide — and Brătescu Mansion; Club Vila Bran is the large family resort.
The catch
Traffic on the DN73 through Bran on weekends and holidays, and queues at the castle ticket office in high season — arrive for opening or late in the afternoon. The castle itself is small and its Dracula connection is marketing rather than history; go for the architecture and the setting. You will need a car to use the villages properly.
Getting there
About 30 km from Brașov via Râșnov on the DN73 — 40 minutes without traffic, much more on a summer Saturday. Regional buses run from Brașov; the "Aurel Stoian" car park by the castle has more than 200 places. See our castles guide.
