Zărnești & Piatra Craiului

What it is

Zărnești is a small former industrial town west of Râșnov, sitting right under the limestone wall of Piatra Craiului — the sharpest ridge in the Romanian Carpathians and a national park. Visitors come for two things: the mountains and the bears.

What is here

The Libearty Bear Sanctuary shelters brown bears rescued from cages and roadside captivity. It is visited only on guided morning tours (classic tours at 09:45 and 11:15, about 1 hour 15), Tuesday to Sunday, closed on Mondays, with no children under five; tickets start at 95 lei for adults and go on sale online at most ten days ahead. From town, the road leads into the Zărnești Gorges, whose main section is 1.7 km of walls rising on both sides — the start of the classic routes up Piatra Craiului. A park fee is payable at the machines in town and at the trailheads (5 lei per person for seven days at the last check). The Wolf Park Adventure rope course is on the edge of town. Food is simple: Casa Rustică and Popasul Craiului.

What it is like

Unpolished and quiet — a working town with a few guesthouses, not a resort. The drama starts at the edge of the houses.

Who should stay here

Hikers, climbers and wildlife travellers; anyone doing Libearty and the gorges on the same trip. Hora cu Brazi, Casa Zărneșteană and Pensiunea Kyfana are typical, honest mountain guesthouses; for more comfort, Poiana Viselor is up at Poiana Mărului.

The catch

There is little luxury and not much of an evening. Piatra Craiului is a serious mountain — the ridge is exposed, weather turns quickly and you should carry the Salvamont number, 0725 826 668. Libearty sells out in season, so book before you drive.

Planning a day

Libearty and the gorges fit comfortably into one day: a morning tour at the sanctuary, lunch in town, then the afternoon walking into the Prăpăstii, where the flat valley floor needs no special skills. Add Bran, 15–20 minutes away by car, only if you are prepared to arrive there late in the afternoon when the crowds thin. Climbing onto the Piatra Craiului ridge itself is a different undertaking — a long, steep day with exposed sections, best done with an early start, a map and settled weather, or with a local mountain guide. In winter, the gorges stay walkable but the ridge becomes a mountaineering objective.

Getting there

About 30 km from Brașov: via Râșnov and Cristian, roughly 40 minutes by car. Regional buses and trains serve the town, less frequently at weekends. See castles to combine it with Bran.
