Libearty, in the oak forest outside Zărnești, is a sanctuary for brown bears rescued from cages, restaurants and roadside captivity — animals that cannot be returned to the wild. Run by the Millions of Friends association, it gives them large forested enclosures, and it is the one place near Brașov where seeing bears is guaranteed and ethical.

How visits work. Guided tours only, in Romanian or English, lasting about 1 hour 15 minutes along a forest path of roughly 2 km. The classic tours leave at 09:45 and 11:15; private and VIP tours start earlier. The sanctuary is open Tuesday to Sunday, mornings only, and closed on Mondays. Children under five are not admitted.

Tickets for the classic tour start at 95 lei for adults and 50 lei for children (official, checked September 2026). They are sold online, at most ten days in advance, in limited numbers per slot, and are non-refundable except for bad weather or emergencies. Private tours cost 200 EUR per group plus tickets.
