Biserica Fortificată Prejmer

Prejmer — Tartlau to the Saxons — has one of the most complete fortified churches in Transylvania and is one of the region's seven UNESCO-listed fortified-church villages (inscribed 1999). The Teutonic Knights began the church in 1218; over the following centuries the villagers wrapped it in a ring of walls about 14 metres high, and built into their thickness some 270 rooms where families kept grain and valuables and sheltered during sieges. The effect, when you step into the courtyard, is of a small wooden-galleried town wrapped around a Gothic church.

Hours: 1 April – 15 October, Monday–Saturday 09:00–17:30, Sunday 11:00–17:30; 16 October – 31 March, 09:00–16:00. Phone +40 774 520 512. We could not confirm the 2026 ticket price; older figures are low, so bring a little cash as well as a card.
