Prejmer & Hărman
Two Saxon villages on the plain east of Brașov with the region's great fortified churches: Prejmer (UNESCO, begun 1218) and Hărman — a half-day trip 12–18 km out.
What it is
Prejmer (Tartlau) and Hărman (Honigberg) are Saxon villages on the flat Bârsa plain north-east of the city. Like every Saxon community here they turned their church into a fortress, ringed by walls and storerooms where the villagers could hold out against raids. Two of the finest stand a few kilometres apart.

The fortified church of Prejmer, begun in 1218 by the Teutonic Knights and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, is often described as the largest in south-eastern Europe: walls about 14 m high with some 270 rooms built into them, where each family kept its stores. Hours are Monday–Saturday 09:00–17:30 and Sunday 11:00–17:30 from April to mid-October, 09:00–16:00 in winter; confirm the ticket price on arrival. The fortified church of Hărman, with its tall bell tower and ring of walls, charges 15 lei for adults; the Teutonic Fest is held there in August. For lunch, Althaus in Hărman and Ritterhoff in Prejmer.
What it is like
Flat, open and agricultural, with long streets of gabled farmhouses. After the crowds at Bran, calm: you may have the Prejmer walls almost to yourself on a weekday.
Who should stay here
Most people visit from Brașov in half a day. Staying makes sense for a quiet night in a village or for the Hărman festival; Camping Honigberg and a handful of guesthouses such as Pensiunea Diana are the options.
The catch
Beyond the two churches there is little to do, and public transport is thin — a car, taxi or bike is the practical way to combine both.
Planning a visit
Start with Prejmer, the more impressive of the two: allow an hour to walk the rooms and the inner gallery of the walls, and climb to the upper levels for the view over the courtyard. Hărman takes forty-five minutes and is on the way back towards the city. The two together make a relaxed morning, which leaves the afternoon free for the Old Town or, if you are driving, for continuing north-east. In summer, arrive before noon — the courtyards have little shade. On Sundays Prejmer opens later, at 11:00. If you want to see more Saxon fortified churches, Viscri and the villages around it are a separate full-day trip.
Getting there
Hărman is about 12 km and Prejmer about 15–18 km from central Brașov by road; trains on the line towards Sfântu Gheorghe stop at both villages. See castles for the fortified-church circuit.
