Astra
A large residential district east of the centre: apartment blocks, local markets and pizzerias, the Yobo science museum and cheaper aparthotels. Somewhere to sleep, not to sightsee.
What it is
Astra is one of the big housing estates built east of the centre in the communist decades to house the workers of Brașov's factories. It is a self-contained town of blocks, schools, markets and boulevards — Calea București, Bulevardul Saturn, Strada Zizinului — and home to tens of thousands of people.
What is here
For visitors, one thing: the Yobo Experience, an interactive science museum that works well with children on a rainy day. Everything else is neighbourhood life — Trattoria del Chianti, Chef's Boutique, the craft-beer bar Queue and specialty coffee at Chiba.
What it is like
Ordinary, busy and honest: supermarkets, traffic, kids on bicycles. There is nothing picturesque, and nothing unsafe either.
Who should stay here
Longer stays on a budget, families who want an apartment with a kitchen, and people visiting friends or working locally. Casa Iacob, KOA Aparthotel and Cubix are the options.
The catch
The Old Town is a 10–15 minute taxi ride or a longer bus journey away, and you will do that every day. Evenings mean either going into the centre or staying in.
Compared with the alternatives
Astra is the city's price floor. For the cost of a small room in the Old Town you can often rent a whole apartment with a kitchen and parking here, which is why families on longer stays, and people in Brașov for work, choose it. Against Noua it is less green but more central; against the Civic Centre it is cheaper but further out and with far less to eat nearby. If you do stay, the Friday rule is worth knowing: all RATBV city transport is free on Fridays, including the line to Poiana, so it is the best day to explore without a car. The rest of the week, a single ticket is 5 lei for 90 minutes and a day pass 20 lei.
