Răcădău
A residential valley tucked behind Tâmpa, where the city meets the forest: blocks, a few guesthouses, the Gabony Steps and trailheads — and the occasional bear.
What it is
Răcădău is the valley on the far side of Tâmpa from the Old Town, running south-east along Bulevardul Valea Cetății towards the forest of Postăvarul. It was built up with apartment blocks in the 1970s and 80s and remains almost entirely residential.
What is here
No monuments. What Răcădău has is the forest at the end of the street: trails lead up towards Tâmpa and Postăvarul from the top of the valley, and the Gabony Steps connect it on foot with the Civic Centre. Neighbourhood places worth knowing are CIAO BELLA, the modern bistro Passage and the Chocolada patisserie; Bricks Pub is the local bar.
What it is like
Green, quiet and very local — people walking dogs into the woods, schoolchildren, small shops. It is also the part of Brașov best known for bears wandering in from the forest after dark, usually towards the rubbish bins at the top of the valley.
Who should stay here
Honestly, few visitors need to. It suits hikers who want the forest on the doorstep and people staying with friends. The one sizeable option is Floarea Soarelui, on the Astra side.
The catch
It is a bus ride or a 25–30 minute walk (over or around Tâmpa) from the Old Town, and there is nothing to do in the evenings. Take bear warnings seriously: do not walk forest edges at dusk, keep food and rubbish inside, and follow any RO-ALERT message. Compared with the alternatives
If what you want is forest rather than monuments, Răcădău gives it to you more directly than any other part of the city apart from Poiana: you can walk from the last blocks into the beech woods in a few minutes. Noua offers a similar edge with the lake and the zoo added; Șchei offers the forest plus the historic quarter. For most visitors one of those two is the better choice, and Răcădău is best treated as the start of a hike rather than a place to sleep. The Tâmpa trails are the easiest outing from here; Postăvarul is a full day and needs proper footwear and a weather check.
Getting there
City buses run along Bulevardul Valea Cetății to the centre; a single ticket is 5 lei for 90 minutes, and transport is free on Fridays. See getting around.
