Prăpăstiile Zărneștilor

Prăpăstiile Zărneștilor — the Zărnești Gorges — are the limestone canyon that leads from the edge of Zărnești into the heart of the Piatra Craiului National Park. The whole gorge runs for about 3.9 km; its main section, the Prăpăstii proper, is about 1.7 km of walls rising steeply on both sides of a gravel road, with trails climbing off towards the ridge.

The walk along the valley floor is easy and flat enough for families, and it is the most dramatic hour's walk around Brașov. It is also where serious hikers start for the Piatra Craiului ridge, and where climbers come for the rock faces.

Park fee. Visitors pay the national park fee — 5 lei per person for seven days at the last check, with children under 14 free — at the blue machines in Zărnești (by the post office and the Visitor Centre on Strada Toplița) and at the trailheads.

Drive or take a taxi from Zărnești to the parking area at the entrance to the gorge. Weather in Piatra Craiului changes quickly: carry a layer and water even for a short walk, and save the Salvamont number, 0725 826 668. Combine it with Libearty in the morning. See the Zărnești guide.
