Brașov to Bran: Bus from Autogara 2, Car, Taxi and Tours — and How to Beat the Queues

The short version

Bran sits about 31 km south-west of Brașov, a 35-minute drive without traffic along the DN73 through Cristian and Râșnov. You have four ways to get there: the regular bus from Autogara 2, your own or a rented car, a taxi or ride-hailing car, or an organised tour. The bus is cheap and runs roughly every hour; the car gives you the freedom to add Râșnov, Moeciu or the bear sanctuary; a tour makes sense only if you want a guide and someone else to worry about parking.

By bus from Autogara 2

The local service to Bran and Moieciu is run by Transbus and leaves from Autogara 2 on Strada Avram Iancu 114, outside the old town (some departures are listed from Autogara 1, next to the railway station, a few minutes earlier). According to the timetable published on the operator's page on the autogari.ro network, last updated in July 2026 and checked in September 2026:

• Departures: roughly every hour from early morning — the first around 06:45–07:00 — until the early evening; the last evening runs operate on weekdays only.
• Journey time: about one hour, depending on traffic and stops.
• Fare: 15 lei one way, paid to the driver or at the station.
• Coming back: buses leave Bran at around 38 minutes past each hour, roughly from 05:40 to 19:40.

The bus follows the main road through Râșnov and stops in Bran near the castle. Timetables change with the season and on public holidays, and the published data comes from an aggregator rather than a printed station board — confirm the time of the last bus back at the station before you leave, and ask the driver for the stop by the castle. Long-distance coaches from Bucharest Otopeni to Bran also pass through, but they are timed for the airport, not for day-trippers.

By car

The route is simple: leave the city west towards Cristian, follow the DN73 through Râșnov and climb gently into the Bran pass. It is about 31 km and 35 minutes on a clear road; on summer and autumn weekends, and during the Halloween days, the final kilometres into Bran can crawl.

Parking. There is paid parking near the castle; a large car park of more than 200 spaces, known locally as "Aurel Stoian", is about 300 m away (reported by secondary sources; tariff not confirmed). Guesthouses and restaurants along the main road also rent spaces on busy days. Arrive before 10:00 at weekends and you will park close.

Winter. Winter tyres are compulsory whenever the road is covered in snow, ice or frost. Beyond Bran, the road into Moieciu and Fundata climbs quickly and needs care.

By taxi or ride-hailing

Both Uber and Bolt operate in Brașov. There is no fixed fare to Bran, so here is our own calculation from the published rates: Uber has quoted around 2 lei per kilometre in Brașov, and crowd-sourced data put metered taxis at about 3.10 lei per kilometre plus a similar starting fee (both checked September 2026). For 31 km that suggests roughly 60–100 lei one way, before surge pricing. It is an estimate, not a quote. Finding a car back from Bran late in the afternoon can take a while — agree the return with your driver, or book it in the app before you finish your visit.

By organised tour

Many agencies run day tours from Brașov that combine Bran with Râșnov, and sometimes with Peleș in Sinaia. They are convenient in winter or without a car, and a good guide adds real value to the Dracula story — which is mostly legend. Opening hours and the ticket

The castle's official site gives the following hours (last entry) for 2026:

• 1 April – 31 July: Monday 12:00–18:00, Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–18:00
• August: Monday 12:00–19:30, Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–19:30
• September: Monday 12:00–19:00, Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–19:00
• 1 October – 31 March: Monday 12:00–18:00, Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–18:00

Mondays always open at noon. The castle's ticket page listed an adult ticket from 90 lei when we checked in September 2026, but some independent guides quote higher 2026 prices; check on the castle's own site before you go. Details on our Bran Castle page.

How to avoid the queues

1. Arrive for opening at 09:00, Tuesday to Sunday. The first hour is the calmest.
2. Or come late. The last ninety minutes before closing are quieter than midday.
3. Avoid Monday mornings. The castle opens only at noon and the queue builds outside.
4. Prefer weekdays from May to October; weekends are the busiest.
5. Check the castle's own site for online tickets for your date, so that you queue only for entry.

Halloween at Bran 2026

The castle's Halloween programme runs on 24–30 October and 1 November 2026, according to its official events page — an evening, adult-oriented event with separate tickets. On those days traffic into Bran is heavy from the late afternoon. Our Halloween at Bran Castle guide has the details.

Combining Bran with Râșnov

Râșnov is on the way: 14 km before Bran, about 20 minutes by car. The classic half-day is Râșnov in the morning — the citadel is on a hill with views over the Bârsa plain — and Bran after lunch, or the other way round when you want Bran early and quiet. Our advice

Take the bus if you are only going to Bran and back — it is cheap and frequent. Drive if you want Râșnov, Moeciu or the bears in the same day. Whatever you choose, go early, avoid Monday mornings and the Halloween evenings unless that is the point, and give the valley as much time as the castle.
