The Best Time to Visit Brașov, Season by Season

The short version

Brașov has four real seasons, and each one changes the trip. Summer is warm and long-evening, perfect for walking and terraces; autumn turns the beech forest on Tâmpa copper; winter brings snow on the medieval roofs, a Christmas market and skiing twenty minutes away in Poiana Brașov; spring is green, cool and quiet until the Junii ride out after Easter.

• Best all-round: late May to June, and September to mid-October.
• For snow and skiing: January to early March, with the Christmas market from late November.
• For festivals: late April or May (Junii, city days) and August (jazz and blues, Oktoberfest).
• Quietest and cheapest: November before the market opens, and March to early April.

Whatever the month, the city sits at about 540 to 650 metres in a mountain basin, so it is always a few degrees cooler than the plains, and nights are fresh even in July.

The climate, month by month

Two things the averages hide. First, the Bârsa basin traps cold air: winter nights can drop far below the mean, and the record is −33 °C. Second, June is the wettest month, mostly in short afternoon thunderstorms that clear by evening. Check the live weather before you pack.

Spring: March to May

March and early April are the in-between weeks: snow gone from the city but lingering on Postăvarul, the ski season closing at the end of March, many terraces still shut. Prices are low and the museums empty.

From mid-April the city wakes up. Zilele Brașovului, the city days, bring concerts and fairs to the squares (in 2026 they ran on 17–19 April). The great spring event is the parade of the Junii, the young horsemen of Șchei, on the Sunday after Orthodox Easter; in 2027 it falls on Sunday 9 May, starting from Piața Unirii at about 11:00. Late May is one of the loveliest times of year: lilac, long evenings and hiking paths open on Tâmpa.

Summer: June to August

Summer is high season. Days are warm, rarely hot, and the Old Town lives outdoors: terraces on Piața Sfatului and Republicii, open-air concerts, the cable car running until late. It is the best season for day trips into the mountains, for Piatra Craiului and the bear sanctuary at Zărnești, and for the castles, although Bran is at its most crowded in July and August; go at opening time.

Festival highlights of recent summers include the Brașov Jazz & Blues Festival in Piața Sfântul Ioan in mid-August (14–16 August in 2026) and Oktoberfest Brașov, held under licence from Munich, from late August into early September. The metal festival Rockstadt Extreme Fest has moved from Râșnov to Ghimbav. Dates change every year; our events calendar carries the confirmed ones.

Autumn: September to November

September and early October are, for many locals, the best weeks of the year: stable weather, fewer tourists, harvest fairs in the squares and the Alpin Film Festival in late September. From early October the forests on Tâmpa and Postăvarul turn gold and copper; a sunset ride up the cable car at this time is hard to beat.

Two autumn closures to plan around in 2026 (checked September 2026): Pelișor in Sinaia is closed from 28 September to 3 November and Peleș from 2 November to 1 December. At Bran, the castle hosts adult-oriented Halloween evenings from 24 to 30 October and on 1 November 2026. November is the quietest month of all: grey, cool and cheap, with good hotel rates, until the Christmas market opens.

Winter: December to February

Winter is the other high season. The Christmas market fills Piața Sfatului, planned for 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with a tall fir, wooden chalets, mulled wine and kürtőskalács; the city usually celebrates New Year's Eve in the square too. See our Christmas market guide.

Snow usually arrives in December, and Poiana Brașov, 12 km away, is Romania's best-known ski resort. In recent seasons the slopes opened between late November and early January and closed at the end of March; 2026/27 dates and lift prices had not been announced when we checked in September 2026. In February 2027 Poiana hosts the alpine events of the European Youth Olympic Festival (14–21 February), so expect busier slopes and hotels that week. Pack properly: the old town's cobbles freeze, and at −10 °C the walk up to the White Tower becomes a winter sport of its own.

When to avoid

• Summer weekends at Bran between 11:00 and 16:00, unless you enjoy queues.
• Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings on the Prahova Valley road from and to the capital, in every season; the train is the answer, see Bucharest to Brașov.
• Big-event weekends if you have not booked: Junii, the jazz festival, the first Christmas-market weekend and New Year's Eve fill the Old Town's hotels early.

For a first visit: the second half of September. Warm days, cool nights, open terraces, clear views from Tâmpa, the castles without the summer crowds, and hotel prices below their summer peak.
