Piatra Craiului and the Zărnești Gorges: the King's Rock, from Easy Canyon to Serious Ridge

The short version

West of Bran, a single limestone blade rises out of the forest: Piatra Craiului, the "King's Rock", a narrow ridge some 25 km long that looks from Zărnești like a wave frozen at the moment of breaking. It is the most beautiful mountain near Brașov and a national park since 1990. At its foot, the Zărnești Gorges (Prăpăstiile Zărneștilor) cut a deep, cool corridor between cliffs — an easy, spectacular walk that almost anyone can do.

• Distance: Zărnești is about 30 km south-west of Brașov, 40–50 minutes by car.
• Easy option: walk the gorges from the Zărnești end — flat to gently rising, 1–2 hours in and out.
• Big option: continue to the Curmătura hut, or — for experienced, equipped hikers only — the ridge itself.
• Pair with: the Libearty bear sanctuary (mornings) or Bran Castle (afternoon).

The park and its rules

Piatra Craiului National Park protects the ridge, its forests and a remarkable flora — including the Piatra Craiului pink (*Dianthus callizonus*), a small carnation that grows nowhere else on earth. Chamois live on the cliffs; bears, wolves and lynx in the forests below.

A small park visitor fee applies to adults. Older official pages list it at 5 lei per person for seven days, paid at blue machines in Zărnești (at the post office and the visitor centre on Strada Toplița) and at trailheads such as Plaiul Foii and Valea lui Ivan; we could not confirm the 2026 amount when we checked in September 2026, so carry a little cash and a card. Children under 14 and local residents are exempt. Keep your receipt — rangers do check.

Park rules are the usual: stay on marked trails, no fires outside designated places, no drones without authorisation, take your rubbish home, and keep dogs on a lead.

The Zărnești Gorges

The gorges are the park's easy masterpiece. From the edge of Zărnești a forest road runs up the valley; after a few kilometres the walls close in and the track enters the Prăpăstii, a canyon whose main sector is about 1.7 km long, with limestone cliffs rising sheer on both sides. The whole gorge system measures around 3.9 km. In summer it is shady and cool; in autumn the beech woods above turn copper; in winter it can be icy and is best with microspikes.

How to do it: drive or take a taxi to the end of the asphalt beyond Zărnești (parking area near the park entrance), then walk. The gradient is gentle; good trainers are enough in dry weather. Return the same way, or continue up to the Curmătura hut for a real mountain half-day. The cliffs are also one of Romania's classic rock-climbing areas — you will see climbers on the walls in season. Beyond the gorges: Curmătura and the ridge

Cabana Curmătura sits in a meadow below the ridge at about 1,470 m, with a direct view of the limestone walls. From Zărnești it is a steady climb of a couple of hours on marked trails, through the gorges or the forest road — a rewarding day walk for anyone reasonably fit, with food at the hut in season.

The ridge (creasta Pietrei Craiului) is another matter. The traverse to the highest point, La Om, at 2,238 m, involves exposed sections, chains, loose rock and long distances without water. It is a serious undertaking for experienced mountain walkers with proper gear, a forecast and an early start, and it should not be attempted in snow, fog or storms. When to go

• May–June: meadows in flower, waterfalls, long days — our favourite.
• July–August: warm; start early to avoid afternoon storms on the heights.
• September–October: the best light and colour; cooler, quieter trails.
• Winter: the gorges remain walkable with care; the ridge is for mountaineers only.

Getting there

By car, take the road to Râșnov and then turn west to Zărnești; the town sits at the foot of the ridge. Regional buses connect Brașov and Zărnești, and there is a local train line, but services are limited — our getting around guide has the options, including taxis and ride-hailing. A full day from Brașov

1. 08:45 — drive to Zărnești.

• Tell someone your route; mobile coverage is patchy in the gorges.

Our verdict

If you have one day for nature near Brașov, give it to Piatra Craiului. The gorges are the most spectacular easy walk in the region; Curmătura adds a true mountain setting; the ridge is for those who know what they are doing.
