Where to Stay in Poiana Brașov: The Best Hotels for a Ski Trip

The first decision: resort or city?

Poiana Brașov is one of the few ski resorts where staying off the mountain is a serious option. The old town of Brașov is twelve kilometres and about twenty minutes below, with a bus every twenty minutes through the day. So before choosing a hotel, choose a way of spending the evenings.

• Stay in Poiana if the skiing is the point: you walk to the lifts, you are on the first gondola without a car, children can nap between sessions and ski-school meeting points are next door. Evenings are quiet — a long dinner, a spa, early nights.
• Stay in Brașov if the trip is half city, half ski: medieval streets, far more restaurants and bars, and museums for the day you do not ski. The price is a daily commute, weekend traffic on Drumul Poienii and parking at the top — see getting to Poiana Brașov.

Whichever you choose, a local tourist tax of 12 lei per person per night applies in both Brașov and Poiana from 2026 (7 lei promotion tax plus 5 lei for the Salvamont mountain-rescue service, collected by the hotel; checked September 2026).

Understanding the village

Poiana is spread over a plateau, and walking distances matter in ski boots. Think of three zones:

1. The gondola side (west). The base of the Postăvarul Expres gondola, the Kanzel cable car, the Stadion nursery slope and the start of the Lupului chairlift. The most convenient place to sleep if you ski every day.
2. The Bradul side (east). The base of the Capra Neagră cable car and the gentle, floodlit Bradul slope. Ideal for families with small children.
3. The upper village (north). Hotels and chalets further up the plateau towards the equestrian centre, typically ten to fifteen minutes' walk from the lifts, quieter and often with the better views.

The luxury tier

Swissôtel Poiana Brașov — the resort's first five-star hotel and the first Swissôtel in Romania, part of Accor, opened in September 2024 with 64 rooms in its first phase. A second phase with more rooms, a larger spa and conference space has been announced, with timelines that differ from one report to the next — ask about building work when you book. The hotel also houses a steak restaurant, Artegianale.

Teleferic Grand Hotel — a large four-star deluxe hotel with 127 rooms, a spa and a pool, about five minutes on foot from the Kanzel cable car. The most practical grand hotel for skiers who want to walk to the lifts.

Hotel Simona Halep — a four-star hotel named after the Romanian tennis champion, on Strada Poiana Ruia in the former Heraldic Club guesthouse.

A note on names you may read elsewhere: a Kempinski hotel was announced for Poiana in 2023, but according to Brașov City Hall no building permit was ever requested. It does not exist, and we would not plan around it.

Comfortable four-stars and family favourites

• Alpin Resort Hotel — a large four-star in the upper village; a walk of ten minutes or more, or a short drive, to the lifts.
• Hotel Escalade — a four-star close to the gondola and Stadion, one of the best-placed addresses for ski-school mornings.
• Ana Hotels Sport and Ana Hotels Bradul — part of the group that owns the Kanzel and Capra Neagră cable cars, grouped around the Bradul side of the village.
• Acasă la Dracula — a four-star in the upper village whose name tells you the theme.
• Aurelius (Împăratul Romanilor) — central in the village, with the Miorița restaurant in the same complex.

Staying in Brașov instead

If you choose the city, stay within easy reach of Livada Poștei, where bus 20 starts, or plan on taxis. The strongest luxury addresses:

• Aro Palace — the grande dame on Bulevardul Eroilor, opened in 1939 and due to become the Hyatt Regency Aro Palace in 2027 after a renovation of up to 250 rooms. The hotel was reported to stay open during the works; ask which wing you will be in.
• Kronwell and Qosmo — two contemporary hotels selected by the Michelin Guide's hotel list in 2026. Qosmo, in the Coresi district, has 128 rooms and 5 suites.
• Bella Muzica — rooms in a sixteenth-century building on Piața Sfatului itself.
• Casa Wagner — a boutique hotel in the old town.

When to book

The whole area fills for three periods: Christmas to New Year, weekends from January onwards, and the week of the European Youth Olympic Festival, 14–21 February 2027, when athletes, teams and officials take many of the rooms in Poiana. For those dates, book early and read cancellation terms carefully, because the season's opening date has not been announced (checked September 2026) and depends on the cold. January weekdays are the calmest and usually the best value.
