Ski Rental and Ski Schools in Poiana Brașov: Prices, Lessons, Tips

How it works in Poiana

Ski schools and rental shops in Poiana Brașov are private businesses clustered around the two bases of the resort: the Stadion and gondola area at the western end of the village, and the Bradul and Capra Neagră area to the east. Most schools also rent equipment, many rental shops can arrange an instructor, and almost all of them are within a few minutes' walk of the nursery slopes. There is no single official ski school, and lift passes are always separate — neither a lesson nor a rental includes a ski pass.

Prices below come from the schools' own websites and are the latest published figures we could find — mostly 2024/25 or 2025/26, checked September 2026. The 2026/27 lists usually appear in November, around the time the lift prices are approved. Use them as a guide to scale, not as a quote.

What rental costs

A complete rental set for a beginner or intermediate — skis, boots and poles — cost roughly 100–150 lei a day in Poiana in 2025/26. For a concrete example, one long-established school and rental centre in the resort listed these daily prices for 2024/25:

• Skis, boots and poles: 110 lei adult / 100 lei child
• The same with a helmet: 120 lei adult / 110 lei child
• Helmet only: 60 lei · goggles: 60 lei · gloves: 40 lei
• Race or premium ("VIP") skis: 250 lei

Multi-day rentals are usually cheaper per day; ask. Snowboards and boots are available at most of the same shops.

Four rental decisions that matter

1. Boots first. Take time over the fitting and walk around in them. A boot that hurts on day one will ruin day three. Renting at the base, rather than in town, means you can walk back and change them at lunchtime. At least one school in Poiana offers proper bootfitting.
2. Sharp edges. Most of the snow in Poiana is artificial and becomes hard in the afternoon. Ask for skis that have been recently serviced, with sharp edges and fresh wax; it is not an upsell, it is safety.
3. A helmet. For children it should be automatic; for adults it is sensible on a mountain this busy at weekends.
4. Rent the day before. In high season the shops are fullest between 08:30 and 09:30. Collecting your set the evening before gives you the first gondola.

What lessons cost

The same school published these prices for a one-hour lesson in 2024/25, not including equipment or lift pass:

• Peak season: group of 4 or more 170 lei per person, 2–3 people 180 lei, private 190 lei
• Off-peak: group 150 lei, 3 people 160 lei, 2 people 170 lei

In other words, a private lesson in Poiana costs little more than a group one, and that changes the calculation: for a nervous adult or a small child, private is almost always the better buy. Groups make sense for confident children who like company and for friends at the same level.

How many lessons?

• Complete beginners: two to three hours a day for the first two or three days. Short sessions work better than long ones; the legs tire quickly and the snow hardens after lunch.
• Children under six: one hour at a time, with breaks. The moving carpet on Stadion and the gentle slope of Bradul are where they will spend their first days.
• Intermediates: one or two private hours to fix technique on steeper ground, usually on Sulinar and the upper Drumul Roșu after the Postăvarul Expres gondola.

When to book

Lessons and rentals fill up at predictable times: the week between Christmas and New Year, weekends from January onwards, and the February week when Romanian schools take their winter break. In 2027 the European Youth Olympic Festival (14–21 February) will also bring teams and coaches to Poiana. For those dates, book lessons at least two to three weeks ahead. In January midweek you can usually arrange something the day before.
