Tipping in Brașov
Around 10% in restaurants, 15% for service that earned it. Since 2023 a tip must go on the receipt, so you may be asked how much to add before the card is charged.
Restaurants and cafés
Tipping is voluntary but expected in sit-down restaurants: about 10% is normal, 15% for very good service, nothing if the service was poor. Check the bill first — a few places add a service charge, and you do not tip twice.
How it works now
Since 2023 Romanian law requires tips to be recorded on the fiscal receipt. In practice, when you pay by card the waiter will often ask how much you want to add, or the bill will offer a choice of percentages. Say the total you want charged, or the amount of the tip. Leaving cash on the table still happens, but the tip is meant to go through the till.
Elsewhere
- Bars and cafés — round up, or leave a few lei for table service.
- Taxis — round up; app rides need nothing.
- Hotels — a few lei for the porter; something for housekeeping on a longer stay.
- Ski instructors and mountain guides — a tip at the end of a good lesson or day is appreciated, not required.
