March is the month when Brașov's two seasons pass each other. On Postăvarul there is usually still a good base from the winter, the sun is higher and the light is long, and spring skiing — soft snow after lunch, firm in the morning — can be the most pleasant of the year. By the end of the month the lower slopes are giving up, and the ski season generally closes.
In town the snow melts, the promenade under Tâmpa turns muddy, and the first café tables come out on sunny days. Visitor numbers are at their lowest of the year, so this is the month to see the Black Church, the Weavers' Bastion and Strada Sforii without anyone in the frame. On 1 March the town wears mărțișor — the red-and-white string given for luck.
Two things to know. The bears are waking up, so the forest paths on Tâmpa and around Poiana call for the usual caution. And the mountain trails higher up stay snowbound and avalanche-prone well into spring — this is not yet hiking season above the tree line.
What to know
- The ski season in Poiana usually ends in late March or early April, depending on snow.
- Raliul Brașovului, the opening round of the national rally championship, is usually held in mid-March (2026: 14–15 March).
- Bears are active again from spring — never feed them, keep to marked paths and carry food sealed.
