If you are coming to ski, February is the month to choose. Thirty years of data put the deepest natural snow at the Poiana base in February, the cold is steadier than in December, and the days are already noticeably longer than at New Year. Snow-making covers the gaps, but in February the mountain rarely needs it.
The one thing to plan around is the Romanian school ski holiday — a week in February whose dates vary by county. That week, and every weekend, the Poiana hotels and the gondola queues fill with families from Bucharest. Book the mountain early or come midweek.
In town, February is still winter: highs a few degrees above freezing, short grey afternoons, and a Piața Sfatului that belongs to the people who live here. 24 February is Dragobete, the Romanian lovers' day — a gentler, older cousin of Valentine's, marked with dinners rather than crowds.
