January splits Brașov in two. Down in the walled town the New Year crowds leave after the first week, hotel rates fall back, and the Black Church, the museums on Piața Sfatului and the cafés are as calm as they get all year. Up in Poiana Brașov, twelve kilometres and four hundred metres higher, it is the middle of the ski season, and weekends on the Postăvarul slopes are full.
It is the coldest month: daytime highs hover around freezing and nights well below it, and snow on the Old Town roofs is normal rather than rare. The Christmas market on Piața Sfatului runs into the first days of the month, and 1–2, 6, 7 and 24 January are all public holidays — the town fills up again for those long weekends.
If you ski, come midweek: the lifts and the restaurants on the mountain are noticeably emptier from Monday to Thursday. If you do not, January is the cheapest way to see the Old Town under snow — dress for −10°C in the evening and plan your days around warm interiors.
What to know
- The Christmas market on Piața Sfatului runs until 3 January 2027.
- Public holidays: 1–2 January, 6 January (Epiphany), 7 January (St John) and 24 January (Union Day). Museums close on some of them.
- Weekends at Poiana are the busiest days of the ski year; weekdays are far calmer.
- Bus 20 links Livada Poștei with Poiana Brașov; RATBV tickets are 5 lei for 90 minutes, and Fridays are free.
