December is the month Brașov looks most like its postcard. The Christmas market fills Piața Sfatului in front of the Council House, the Old Town is strung with lights, and snow on the medieval roofs is likely rather than hoped for. It is also the start of the ski season: the lifts at Poiana Brașov usually open during the month, as soon as the cold allows snow-making.
1 December, Romania's National Day, is a public holiday, and the town fills for the long weekend. The market is best on a weekday evening; weekends before Christmas are crowded. 25 and 26 December are public holidays, and many restaurants close on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day — book ahead.
New Year's Eve is the most expensive night of the year, in town and even more so in Poiana, where the hotels sell packages with gala dinners. The city's own party is free, in Piața Sfatului — the 2025/26 edition had a laser show instead of fireworks.
