Muntele Tâmpa

Tâmpa — the Zinne of the Saxons — is the forested limestone ridge that rises straight out of the eastern edge of the Old Town to 960 metres. In the Middle Ages it carried the Brasovia citadel, demolished in the fifteenth century; today it is a protected natural area of about 206 hectares, home to rare orchids and, occasionally, brown bears.

Its best-known feature is the Hollywood-style BRAȘOV sign near the summit, installed in 2004, with letters about six metres tall and lit at night. The viewpoint beside it looks straight down onto Piața Sfatului and the roof of the Black Church.

There are two ways up. The cable car takes a few minutes. On foot, well-used forest paths start from the promenade under Tâmpa near the lower station; allow around an hour to the top at an easy pace, on switchbacks that are steep in places. The walk is free. Stay on the paths, carry water in summer, and avoid the forest at dusk: bears live on this mountain.
