Poarta Ecaterinei — the Katharinentor — is the only original city gate of Saxon Brașov still standing. The Tailors' Guild built it in 1559 to replace an older gate lost to a flood in 1526. Look at the tower: the four small corner turrets were the sign that the city held *ius gladii*, the right to try and execute its own criminals, and the city's coat of arms — a crown on an oak trunk with its roots — is set into the wall.
The gate led from the walled Saxon town to Șchei, the Romanian quarter outside it, and it stands a few steps from the classicist Poarta Șchei of the 1820s, which replaced it for traffic. The tower houses a small museum; its hours and ticket price vary and we could not confirm them for 2026, so treat the interior as a bonus. The exterior is free to see at any time.
It is part of a short walk that takes in Strada Sforii, the gates and the path up to the White Tower.
