Bartolomeu

What it is

Bartolomeu — historically Brașovechi, Old Brașov — is the north-western quarter at the far end of Strada Lungă, where the earliest settlement stood before the walled town was built. Today it is residential, with light industry and retail towards the ring road, and it is the first part of the city you cross coming in from the airport.

What is here

The Church of St Bartholomew at Strada Lungă 251, built 1225–1260 in early Gothic with Romanesque details, is the oldest standing building in Brașov (visiting hours vary; check before going). Further along is the Church of the Three Hierarchs. To the north, on Bulevardul Griviței, the Aquatic Paradise water park, open every day, from 35 lei. For food, Casa Tudor and FRACT are the local draws, and Propaganda is a craft-beer stop on Strada Lungă.

What it is like

Everyday Brașov: long streets of houses and small blocks, bakeries and corner shops, few visitors. The historic church is the one reason most travellers come.

Who should stay here

People flying into Brașov-Ghimbav, families heading for the water park, and those who want low prices and do not mind a bus or a 25–30 minute walk into the Old Town. Long Street, Hotel Regal and Monarch House are here.

The catch

It is far from Tâmpa and the squares, and it is not scenic. Evenings are quiet in the sense of having little to do.

Compared with the alternatives

Bartolomeu is the most convenient part of the city for the airport and the ring road: the A1 bus passes through, and drivers heading for Bran, Râșnov or Făgăraș are already on the right side of town. That is its real advantage over Blumăna or the Civic Centre, which are closer to the sights but further from the exits. The trade-off is the evening — you will either take a bus or taxi into the Old Town or eat locally. With children, the Aquatic Paradise (full-day adult tickets around 100 lei, children under 1.40 m 40 lei at the last check) can fill a rainy day on its own.

Getting there

The A1 airport bus calls at Gara Bartolomeu and Biserica Bartolomeu. Regional trains stop at Bartolomeu station. From here into Livada Poștei is a short bus ride. See getting around and the airport.

Living here

Bartolomeu is where Brașov is growing fastest on its western side, and the housing shows three eras side by side. Along Strada Lungă and the streets around the old church there are old single-storey houses with courtyards; around the stadiums and Bulevardul Griviței, communist-era blocks; and north of the railway, in Bartolomeu Nord, new low-rise residential complexes. More are coming: in September 2025 a local developer announced three blocks with 247 apartments near the site of the city's planned multipurpose hall, due in spring 2028, and the local business press describes the area as a magnet for investors because of its access to the ring road, the motorway and the airport (bizbrasov.ro, 18 September 2025).

Daily life is practical. Piața Bartolomeu, the municipal market on Strada Ioan Bogdan, covers fresh food; large DIY and retail parks line the roads towards Ghimbav; and the Aquatic Paradise water park and the stadiums supply the leisure. What the area lacks is forest: Tâmpa and the Old Town squares are on the far side of the centre.

Transport is plentiful. Line 5 runs from the Stadionul Municipal through the Biserica Bartolomeu stop to Patria in the Civic Centre in about 9 minutes, roughly every 8 minutes on weekdays by the RATBV timetable, passing through Blumăna on the way. Line 16 reaches the Primărie stop at the edge of the Old Town in about 17 minutes; line 9 goes to Coresi in about 12; lines 18 and 28 run out to the industrial area around Ghimbav; and the A1 airport bus and regional trains at Bartolomeu station complete the picture. Noise and traffic are the weak point. Bulevardul Griviței and the ring-road junctions carry heavy traffic, the railway runs through the district, and the new-build streets are construction sites for years at a time. The older lanes off Strada Lungă, by contrast, are some of the quietest in the city.

It suits families who want a newer flat with parking, people who drive to work or fly often from Brașov-Ghimbav, and anyone employed in the industrial zones to the west. It suits less well those who want to walk to cafés, the Old Town or the mountain. The honest downsides: traffic, a patchwork streetscape, years of building work in the northern part, and evenings that usually mean a bus or a car into the centre.
