Brașovechi, the oldest settlement: the thirteenth-century St Bartholomew church on Strada Lungă, the Bartolomeu station and the Aquatic Paradise water park.
What it is
Bartolomeu — historically Brașovechi, Old Brașov — is the north-western quarter at the far end of Strada Lungă, where the earliest settlement stood before the walled town was built. Today it is residential, with light industry and retail towards the ring road, and it is the first part of the city you cross coming in from the airport.
What is here
The Church of St Bartholomew at Strada Lungă 251, built 1225–1260 in early Gothic with Romanesque details, is the oldest standing building in Brașov (visiting hours vary; check before going). Further along is the Church of the Three Hierarchs. To the north, on Bulevardul Griviței, the Aquatic Paradise water park, open every day, from 35 lei. For food, Casa Tudor and FRACT are the local draws, and Propaganda is a craft-beer stop on Strada Lungă.
What it is like
Everyday Brașov: long streets of houses and small blocks, bakeries and corner shops, few visitors. The historic church is the one reason most travellers come.
Who should stay here
People flying into Brașov-Ghimbav, families heading for the water park, and those who want low prices and do not mind a bus or a 25–30 minute walk into the Old Town. Long Street, Hotel Regal and Monarch House are here.
The catch
It is far from Tâmpa and the squares, and it is not scenic. Evenings are quiet in the sense of having little to do.
Compared with the alternatives
Bartolomeu is the most convenient part of the city for the airport and the ring road: the A1 bus passes through, and drivers heading for Bran, Râșnov or Făgăraș are already on the right side of town. That is its real advantage over Blumăna or the Civic Centre, which are closer to the sights but further from the exits. The trade-off is the evening — you will either take a bus or taxi into the Old Town or eat locally. With children, the Aquatic Paradise (full-day adult tickets around 100 lei, children under 1.40 m 40 lei at the last check) can fill a rainy day on its own.
