If you can choose, choose September. The school year starts, the summer crowds drain out of the Old Town and the castles, and the weather is still warm — highs around 20°C, cool nights, the steadiest skies of the year. The afternoon thunderstorms of June and July have mostly gone, which makes this the best month for long mountain days: Piatra Craiului, the Bucegi plateau, the ridge above Poiana.
Oktoberfest Brașov runs into the first week of the month, and the harvest days — Zilele Recoltei — fill the squares with produce later on. In late September the Alpin Film Festival brings mountain cinema to Brașov, Râșnov and Bușteni. Hotel rates stay high on weekends, but weekdays are noticeably easier.
It is also the start of the bear-watching season's best stretch: the bears feed heavily before winter, and guided evening hides in the forests around Zărnești and Șinca are at their most rewarding.

- Pelișor closes for conservation from 28 September to 3 November 2026; Peleș stays open (closed Mondays and Tuesdays).
