October is when the beech forests around Brașov turn, and from the top of Tâmpa or the Postăvarul gondola the whole Bârsa basin is copper and gold. The first half of the month is often dry and bright; by the end, the first frosts arrive and the first snow can dust the peaks.
It is a good month for everything that needs no summer: the Old Town without queues, the fortified churches of Prejmer and Hărman in low autumn light, long lunches. The Black Church and Prejmer switch to their shorter winter hours from 16 October. At Bran, the castle's Halloween programme runs over the last week of the month and into 1 November — atmospheric, and aimed at adults.
Mountain roads begin to close for the winter — the Transfăgărășan usually shuts at the end of October — and in the high mountains the weather turns quickly. Below the tree line, though, October walking is superb.
