Biserica Sfântul Nicolae din Șchei

The Church of St Nicholas is the spiritual centre of Șchei and of Romanian Brașov. Tradition places a wooden church here in 1292, and a papal document of 1399 already mentions Orthodox worship in the quarter. The stone church was begun in 1495 and enlarged in 1519 with support from the Wallachian prince Neagoe Basarab; the bell tower followed in 1584–1597. Its tall, slightly Gothic silhouette is the result of centuries of additions rather than a single plan.

Inside and out, the murals are by Costin Petrescu, painted in 1939–1946. The diplomat Nicolae Titulescu is buried in the churchyard, and in the same yard stands the First Romanian School Museum.

The church is an active parish: dress modestly, keep quiet during services, and ask before photographing inside. It stands on Piața Unirii, where the Junii parade gathers each year on the first Sunday after Orthodox Easter — 9 May in 2027.
