Sinagoga Beth Israel

Brașov's Neolog synagogue, Beth Israel, was built in 1899–1901 on Strada Poarta Șchei, a few steps from Strada Sforii. It is a fine example of the eclectic style of its time — neo-Gothic with Moorish touches — and it has been a listed monument since 2004. It is still used by the city's small Jewish community.

Visits are usually possible on weekdays during office hours (09:00–16:00 has been the published window, Monday to Friday), with a modest entry fee; the figures we found are several years old, so check before you go and expect it to be closed on Saturdays and Jewish holidays.

The interior is the reason to visit, but even from the courtyard the building is a reminder that the Saxon-Romanian story of Brașov had other chapters too. Combine it with Poarta Ecaterinei and Poarta Șchei, both within a couple of minutes.
