Poarta Șchei is the plain, classicist gate at the south-western corner of the Old Town, built in the late 1820s to let traffic through the walls towards Șchei — the older Poarta Ecaterinei beside it was too narrow.

For centuries this corner was the line between two worlds: the Saxon burghers inside the walls and the Romanian community of Șchei outside, who were not allowed to settle in the city. Walk through it and up Strada Prundului and you reach Piața Unirii, the Church of St Nicholas and the First Romanian School in about ten to fifteen minutes.

Today the gate is simply part of the walk between the Old Town and Șchei, and the best way to feel the old boundary is to go through it on foot: on one side the Saxon merchant streets, on the other the steeper, humbler lanes of the Romanian quarter. The gate is free and open at all hours. The Beth Israel synagogue and Strada Sforii are both within a couple of minutes.
