June is the start of the mountain summer. The snow is gone from all but the highest gullies, Piatra Craiului and the Bucegi are walkable end to end, and the days are the longest of the year — light until well after nine. It is the month for the Zărnești gorges, for the gondola up Postăvarul with lunch at the top, and for the ridge walks that are too cold or too icy for the rest of the year.
The trade-off is the weather. June is one of the wettest months here, and the rain comes as afternoon thunderstorms that build over the mountains after lunch. Start early, be off exposed ridges by early afternoon, and carry a layer even when Brașov is warm.
In town it is the start of the busy season: terraces full, the castles filling up at weekends, hotel rates climbing towards July. Rusalii (Orthodox Pentecost) falls on 20–21 June in 2027, a long weekend when half of Bucharest heads for the mountains.
What to know
- 1 June (Children's Day) and Rusalii — 20–21 June 2027 — are public holidays; expect heavy traffic on DN1 through the Prahova valley.
- Piatra Craiului National Park charges a small visitor fee, paid at the machines in Zărnești and at the trailheads.
